Latest (Longer) Rainbow Row Done

This weekend I was able to put the finishing touches on my latest, and longest (most houses), Rainbow Row to date. Also I have been working on some smaller palmetto tree suncatchers – I poured a second layer of resin on them today and added wire hangers. Fingers crossed that the resin cures as it is still pretty sticky (I used a different type than I typically use).

Originally I had planned to wrap these suncatchers with copper foil and solder them in a traditional stained glass manner, but after I pulled the tape off from the first layer of resin, I thought it would look better this way. It’s an experiment so I’m not sure it will work, so fingers crossed.

Another RRow Poured

Poured and embellished the resin on this latest Rainbow Row window. While I was at it, I made a couple of palm tree suncatchers, too. I still need to paint the window frame and wrap / solder the suncatchers before they will be completely done. Of note is that I used a 16 ounce kit of Envirotex Lite resin for the window. When I measured the resin, it was actually closer to 14 ounces, which is disappointing as I benefit from that little bit of extra coverage.

So many windows!

I spent some time shaping / grinding the individual windows and doors and adding some trees to the scene. I haven’t started shaping / grinding the palm fronds yet, but that still needs attention. After that, I will start adhering the smaller pieces to the houses as they need to be in place / set before I add the flowers and other small decorative details. I also shaped a crescent for the sky.

Next Window

I have been procrastinating on my next window project for several months. Initially I had planned on doing a larger version of Charleston’s Rainbow Row, but I wasn’t sure if it would look as good in a larger format than the other panels I’ve made with it in the past. I bought the glass I needed and then started thinking that maybe I should make another sun, or maybe a moon because I have great moon glass and great spooky sky glass.

But this morning I was asked to donate a window to an upcoming charity event and I decided to just go for it with the Rainbow Row. I won’t know how it will look until I do it, so I might as well do it and stop wondering about it. Hopefully having more room will allow me to do more decorating – trees, birds, flowers, bushes, etc. What I have so far is just rough cuts – I still need to finish the first cuts and then use the grinder to smooth / shape everything before I start with the mosaic adhesive on the first layer. I’m not sure if this will end up in the charity event auction or if another window will, but at least my procrastination is over for the time being!

Pause on Custom Pieces

I am frequently asked about creating custom windows for people. Unfortunately, due to the difficulty in obtaining glass in my area, I am unable to honor requests for custom pieces the vast majority of the time. Choosing art glass is very specific to the particular sheet / run of glass, so ordering it sight unseen can be disappointing. I have a limited amount of glass only in a limited number of colors, and ordering / traveling to get the right glass is cost prohibitive. I’m still willing to discuss custom work with people, but it is very likely that I won’t have the necessary materials easily available to complete many custom jobs.

WA Artisans and Crafters Fair – recap

I had a great time at my first ever West Ashley Artisans and Crafters Fair May 14th. I had an awesome spot right by the food court entrance and closest to the free glitter tattoo lady (perfect for when the little ones wanted to touch something fragile, “Look! Free glitter tattoos!”). It was a pretty good crowd for a random weekend in May. I think I’ll try to do it whenever I can (it’s every 2nd Saturday). I can’t make it in July due to a previous commitment, but I plan to be there on June 11th!
